Lucas County is located in the state of Ohio, United States and has a population is 455,054 according to the 2000. Lucas County was named for Robert Lucas, 12th governor of Ohio, in 1835 during his second term. Its establishment provoked the Toledo War conflict with the Michigan Territory. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,543 km² (596 mi²). 882 km² (340 mi²) of it is land and 662 km² (255 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 42.86% water. Its county seat is Toledo6.

Currently there are 182,847 households, and 116,290 families residing in the county. The population density was 516/km² (1,337/mi²). There were 196,259 housing units at an average density of 223/km² (576/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 77.50% White, 16.98% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. 4.54% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 182,847 households out of which 31.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.70% were married couples living together, 14.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.40% were non-families. 30.10% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.06.

The median income for a household in the county was $38,004, and the median income for a family was $48,190. Males had a median income of $39,415 versus $26,447 for females. The per capita income for the county was $20,518. 13.90% of the population and 10.70% of families were below the poverty line. 19.70% of those under the age of 18 and 8.70% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
