Lucas County is located in the state of Ohio, United States and has a population is 455,054 according to the 2000. Lucas County was named for Robert Lucas, 12th governor of Ohio, in 1835 during his second term. Its establishment provoked the Toledo War conflict with the Michigan Territory. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,543 km² (596 mi²). 882 km² (340 mi²) of it is land and 662 km² (255 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 42.86% water. The racial makeup of the county was 77.50% White, 16.98% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. 4.54% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
