Lucas County Humane Society is the Toledo Area Humane Society. The Toledo Area Humane Society was founded on February 14, 1884 as a private nonprofit organization. As the third oldest Humane Society in the U.S. the Humane Society staff is committed to the welfare of animals. The Toledo Area Humane Society places thousands of animals in loving, permanent homes each year. All animals receive a health exam, vaccinations, and testing for feline leukemia or heartworms. They are also wormed, spayed or neutered, and are temperament tested.
Serving as the "voice for the voiceless" the Toledo Area Humane Society has formed the Cruelty Investigation Program. The Cruelty Investigation Program investigates cruelty to animals and provided homeless, abused, and abandoned animals with protection and safety. Each year they investigate over 1,800 reports of animal abuse or neglect. As recent studies have proven that people who abuse animals are abusive to people as well the investigators are trained to recognize the signs of child abuse, domestic violence and neglect, and are often the first ones to alert the proper authorities.
